Bake Sale

We did a recent bake sale in the Winter Market to raise money for children in Malawi.  We made £122 in total.  We sold cakes and cookies and cupcakes.  I made the cookies and my friends made the cupcakes and cakes.

Did you know that £20 can feed 1 child in Malawi for one whole year?  So we sold enough to feed 6 children for a year each.  I felt very happy that we did that. One year is a really long time.

I’m glad even it’s only some kids, they don’t have to be hungry for a year.

I Just Want a Fanta has been set up by Zero Hunger with Langar.  Langar is part of the Sikh religion (an Indian religion) where they give food to everyone because no one should be hungry.  It doesn’t matter who you are.  I am not Sikh.  The people in Malawi are not Sikh.  But it doesn’t matter.  I think that is a great idea.

Where is Malawi?

Malawi is in Africa in the South.  It is surrounded by bigger countries like Zimbabwe and Tanzania.  Malawi doesn’t have an ocean border because it has countries all around its sides.

Lake Malawi in Malawi is huge.  It is almost 20% of the country. It has beaches and fishing so it doesn’t matter that Malawi doesn’t reach the ocean.  Lake Malawi has lots of different types of fish and 80% of those types of fish are not found anywhere else in the world.

Malawi is safe and friendly but it is very poor.  There are about 16 million people in Malawi.  About half the people live on less than $1 a day!!

My mother’s friend was in the Peace Corps in Malawi.  She met her husband in Malawi. He was volunteering as a dentist.  They didn’t have any dentist offices so once every 6 months he would go out to the villages.  He would sit under a tree and people would line up.  Then he would fix their teeth. If their teeth couldn’t be fixed, then he would pull the tooth out.  Everyone would stand in line and watch them.

My friend’s father is a geologist and has a mining company in Malawi.  Malawi has lots of minerals.
